## Biography

Charles G. Clarke (also credited as Charles Clarke) was an American cinematographer. He began his career as an assistant cameraman at Universal Pictures in 1915, served in the US Army during the First World War, and became a first cameraman in the early 1920s. He worked for studios including Fox and 20th Century-Fox for much of his career, which spanned more than forty years.

Clarke photographed *Viva Villa!* (1934), *Tarzan and His Mate* (1934), *The Grapes of Wrath* (1940, second unit), *Miracle on 34th Street* (1947), *Suddenly* (1954), *Carousel* (1956) and *Flaming Star* (1960). He received four Academy Award nominations for cinematography and served as president of the American Society of Cinematographers.
