## Biography

Charles LeMaire was an American costume designer. Born in Chicago in 1897, he began his career as a vaudeville performer before designing costumes for Broadway productions including the Ziegfeld Follies and The Five O'Clock Girl. He moved into film work by 1925.

LeMaire served as executive designer and wardrobe director at 20th Century-Fox from 1943 to 1959. He worked on nearly 300 films over a 37-year career, including *Miracle on 34th Street* (1947), *All About Eve* (1950), *The Day the Earth Stood Still* (1951), *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1953) and *An Affair to Remember* (1957). He was instrumental in persuading the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to introduce an Oscar for costume design. He won three Academy Awards and received 13 further nominations.

LeMaire died of heart failure in Palm Springs, California, in 1985.
