## Biography

Charles Van Enger was an American cinematographer. Born on 29 August 1890 in Port Jervis, New York, he died on 4 July 1980 in Woodland Hills, California.

In the 1920s he worked on the silent films directed by Ernst Lubitsch for Warner Bros., including *The Marriage Circle* (1924), *Kiss Me Again* (1925) and *Lady Windermere's Fan* (1925). He also contributed to *The Phantom of the Opera* (1925) and *The Big Parade* (1925). During the 1930s he worked in the British film industry.

His later career focused on supporting features for Universal Pictures and independents. He served as director of photography on several Abbott and Costello comedies, including *Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet Frankenstein* (1948), and on entries in the Sherlock Holmes series such as *Sherlock Holmes Faces Death* (1943).
