## Biography

Charles Weldon (1940–2018) was an American actor, director and artistic director. Born in Wetumka, Oklahoma, he began his career as a singer before turning to acting in the late 1960s. He made his Broadway debut in the 1969 musical *Buck White* and appeared in the original San Francisco production of *Hair*.

Weldon joined the Negro Ensemble Company in 1970 and served as its artistic director from 2005 until his death. His stage work included the Broadway production of *The River Niger* (1973). On screen he is known for the role of Blade in *Stir Crazy* (1980), as well as appearances in *Malcolm X* (1992), *The River Niger* (1976) and episodes of *Law & Order* and *Kojak*.
