## Biography

Charles Wood was a British playwright and screenwriter. Born in St Peter Port, Guernsey, he served in the 17th/21st Lancers from 1950 to 1955 before working in theatre and advertising. His military service informed much of his writing on war and the armed forces.

Wood’s screen credits include the screenplays for *Help!* (1965), *The Knack... and How to Get It* (1965), *The Charge of the Light Brigade* (1968) and *The Bed Sitting Room* (1969), all directed by Richard Lester. He also wrote for television, including episodes of *Inspector Morse* (1988) and *Play for Today*, the BAFTA-winning *Tumbledown* (1988), and later films such as *Iris* (2001) and *The Other Man* (2008). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 1984.
