## Biography

Chiu Kang-chien (also credited as Kang Chien Chiu, Peggy Chiu and under the pseudonyms Tai On-ping and Yau Tai On-ping) was a Chinese screenwriter and director. Born on 19 May 1940 in Gulangyu, Fujian, he moved to Taiwan in 1949. He studied at the Taiwan Academy of Arts from 1961 and drama at the University of Hawaii from 1964 before returning to Taiwan, where he co-founded a theatre quarterly and introduced avant-garde European works.

He began screenwriting in Hong Kong at Shaw Brothers in the late 1960s, with his first credited film *The Bells of Death* (1968). In the 1980s he returned to Hong Kong and contributed to several New Wave productions. His screenplays include *Boat People* (1982), *Love Unto Wastes* (1986), *Rouge* (1988), *Full Moon in New York* (1989) and *Center Stage* (1991) for director Stanley Kwan. He also directed a number of films, including *Ming Ghost* (1990). Chiu won Best Screenplay awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards for *Boat People*, *Love Unto Wastes* and *Rouge*, and Best Original Screenplay at the Golden Horse Awards for *Full Moon in New York*. He died in Beijing on 27 November 2013.
