## Fi1m on Christian Friedel

> Christian Friedel can make a polite nod frightening and an awkward courtship moving. We rate his quiet precision highly; the danger is that casting directors keep sending him back to the same period.

Christian Friedel listens to a proposal for a more efficient crematorium with the polite attention of a customer who expects good service. As Rudolf Höss in Jonathan Glazer’s *The Zone of Interest* (2023), he reads to his children and checks the doors at night. Friedel gives these actions the same practical care, making the commandant’s domestic routine hard to bear. Alongside him, Sandra Hüller’s Hedwig is content with her house and garden, making his concern with doing things properly still harder to watch. It is a frightening performance because he never needs to advertise the cruelty.

His film debut, in Michael Haneke’s *The White Ribbon* (2009), used that restraint to make a decent man believable. The schoolteacher’s gentleness gives us some relief from a village where adults teach children to fear authority. Ernst Jacobi provides the older man’s recollection, while Friedel conducts an awkward courtship with Eva, played by Leonie Benesch. We were moved by their attempts to be kind to one another, because Haneke has made such behaviour feel so scarce. The film’s severity can grow repetitive, but Friedel never makes decency look easy or self-congratulatory.

Between those films came the lead as Georg Elser in *13 Minutes* (2015) and a recurring role in *Babylon Berlin* from 2017. Historical drama has repeatedly cast him as an outwardly ordinary figure involved in dark events, which suits his ability to suggest tension without large displays of emotion. Glazer makes particularly good use of that precision, letting the polite nods do the work another film might give to a speech.

*The Zone of Interest* brought international recognition, but also repeated offers of Nazi roles, after which Friedel took a deliberate pause from the period. His television work also includes Fabian in the third series of *The White Lotus* (2025). We would like more parts that allow the kindness he made credible for Haneke, rather than further variations on Höss. If you know him only from Glazer’s film, make *The White Ribbon* the next one.
