## Biography

Christian Matras (29 December 1903 – 4 May 1977) was a French cinematographer. Born in Valence, Drôme, he began his career as a newsreel photographer before working on short films in the late 1920s and moving to feature films in the early 1930s.

He is best known for his work on *Grand Illusion* (1937) directed by Jean Renoir, and for his collaborations with Max Ophüls on *La Ronde* (1950), *Le Plaisir* (1952), *The Earrings of Madame de...* (1953) and *Lola Montès* (1955). Other notable credits include *Cartouche* (1962), *Lola Montès* (1955) and *This Special Friendship* (1964). He photographed more than one hundred feature films over four decades.
