On the evidence of her two series for Taylor Sheridan, the pictures are ready and the storytelling is still catching up. The shot is a rider on a ridge, low sun behind, sky taking two thirds of the frame. Christina Alexandra Voros has made a career out of variations on it, and what marks hers out is the lens. She does not establish a landscape so much as compress it: a very long lens pulls the far ridge up behind the people until the country looks as if it is leaning on them. In *Dutton Ranch* (2026) that is how cattle move through frost; in *The Madison* (2026), which she directed and photographed in its entirety, it is how a family stands about in a field waiting for grief to pass. The weather does the rest. She lights with what the day gives her. She came up shooting: documentaries and small independent films, then feature camerawork on titles including *Ma* (2019), before *Yellowstone* (2018) took her from operating the second camera to photographing the series to directing it. *1883* (2021), on which she directed four episodes and shot a wagon train through a tornado largely without digital help, is where the reputation was made. Since then Taylor Sheridan has handed her whole series, and she has called the partnership "the great creative collaboration of my life". On the evidence it is a partnership of a particular kind: he leaves long gaps in the dialogue and she fills them with country. That is where the trouble starts. In *The Madison* Michelle Pfeiffer plays a woman in mourning who has decided that falling apart would be rude, and Voros has the sense to hold on her hands and her breathing rather than cut to whoever is reacting. It moved us more than we expected, and the reason is that the camera stayed put and let Pfeiffer treat the silence as the part. But six episodes of it is a long time, and Voros the cinematographer indulges Voros the director: shots run on after they have said what they had to say, Breton Vivian's strings arrive whenever the writing runs dry, and Chad Galster cuts to the rhythm of the landscape rather than the scene. *Dutton Ranch*, which she shares with Greg Yaitanes, Phil Abraham and Jessica Lowrey, films branding and calving with more interest than it can find for the plot, and we do not think that is an accident. A day's work on a ranch is a fine thing to look at. It is not a story, and she has not yet shown that she knows the difference when the script does not. Her next is another for Sheridan, *Frisco King*.
