## Biography

Christina Stead (1902–1983) was an Australian novelist, short-story writer and screenwriter. Born in Sydney, she lived for many years in Europe and the United States before returning to Australia shortly before her death.

In the 1940s she worked as a Hollywood screenwriter, contributing to the screenplays for *Madame Curie* (1943) and *They Were Expendable* (1945). She is best known for her novels, including *The Man Who Loved Children* (1940). A committed Marxist, she also taught a workshop in the novel at New York University.
