Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley make the selfish people in *Absolutely Fabulous* (1992) worth spending half an hour with. We laughed at the pair's behaviour because the performances let us enjoy their company without excusing it. Gernon's contribution came with three episodes of the fourth series in 2001, working with an established comic partnership. We rate her ability to handle an ensemble and keep the tone steady, without mistaking that for sole authorship of the comedy.

In 2015 she began directing US series including *New Girl*, *black-ish*, *Superstore*, *The Goldbergs*, *Speechless* (as lead director and executive producer on the pilot and subsequent episodes) and *Ghosts*. She directed and executive produced the 2024 *Gavin & Stacey* finale. She is co-founder of Blue House Productions.
