The best scene Chuck Russell directed has no plot in it. In *The Mask* (1994), a green-headed Jim Carrey is told to empty his pockets, and does, and keeps doing it, and Russell holds on long past the point where a nervous director would have cut away. We laughed out loud, and hardest at that, because the joke is how long it goes on and how sure the film is that Carrey can carry it. He can. That scene is Russell's method in miniature: build the picture out of trickery, practical or digital, then get out of the way of whoever is standing in front of it. He came up the practical route, as a production manager and assistant director on independent films, writing scripts on the side; *Dreamscape* (1984) was the first to be made. After *The Scorpion King* he went a long time without a feature, and when he came back the films, *I Am Wrath* (2016), *Junglee* (2019), *Paradise City* (2022) and *Witchboard* (2024), arrived without much attention, ours included.
