## Biography

Chunibala Devi (c. 1872–1955) was an Indian actress. A former theatre performer, she made her film debut in *Bigraha* (1930) and appeared in *Rikta* (1939) before retiring.

She was brought out of retirement at around the age of 80 by Satyajit Ray to play the elderly aunt Indir Thakrun in *Pather Panchali* (1955). She died in Kolkata of influenza in 1955, before the film's release, though Ray had arranged a private screening for her. The performance earned her a posthumous Best Actress award at the Manila Film Festival in 1966.
