## Fi1m on Claire Maurier

> Claire Maurier makes an impatient mother recognisably human without asking us to excuse her. We rate the restraint of her work in *The 400 Blows*, though the film gives us too little of Gilberte’s own life.

In *The 400 Blows* (1959), Claire Maurier makes a mother’s impatience credible beside a boy’s confusion and defiance. Her Gilberte Doinel is difficult to like, but Maurier resists making her merely hateful. We were unsettled by how ordinary she makes that impatience feel. Alongside Albert Rémy as Julien, she helps keep the adults human while Jean-Pierre Léaud’s Antoine has our sympathy. It is careful supporting work in a film that gives the child far more attention.

Gilberte was her first substantial screen role, after small film parts in the late 1940s. The career that followed took her through popular French comedies as well as dramas, with *La Cuisine au beurre* (1963) and *La Cage aux Folles* (1978) among the comedy credits. Recurring collaborators included director Édouard Molinaro, with whom she made five films. Maternal parts became a recurring assignment, but Madeleine, the seductive older woman in *A Bad Son* (1980), offers a useful reminder not to mistake a casting habit for the whole career.

Our reservation is with François Truffaut’s treatment of the adults, rather than a failure of feeling in Maurier. We wanted more of their lives away from Antoine, and the film’s closeness to the boy sometimes prevents that. Sympathy for him comes easily; understanding her requires information the film only partly supplies. There is a limit to what a supporting actor can do about that. Giving Gilberte more charm would hardly answer the question of who she is when her son is elsewhere.

Later came Suzanne, the café owner in *Amélie* (2001), and a maternal role opposite Gérard Depardieu in *My Afternoons with Margueritte* (2010). Mothers recur in Maurier’s credits, but that should not make Gilberte seem like a routine assignment. Her restraint helps a difficult character remain worth thinking about, even where the writing leaves us wanting more. Start with *The 400 Blows*, but do not watch only the boy.
