## Biography

Clare West was an American costume designer, one of the first to work in Hollywood. She contributed to D. W. Griffith productions including *The Birth of a Nation* (1915) and *Intolerance* (1916), the latter involving two years of design work in collaboration with Paul Iribe.

She later served as chief costume designer for Cecil B. DeMille at Famous Players-Lasky (later Paramount) from around 1918 to 1923. In 1923 she moved to Joseph Schenck's company, where she designed for Norma and Constance Talmadge films and created costumes for Buster Keaton pictures including *Sherlock Jr.* (1924) and *The Navigator* (1924).
