## Biography

Claude-Michel Schönberg is a French composer, songwriter and record producer, best known for his musical theatre collaborations with lyricist Alain Boublil.

Born in Vannes in 1944, he began his career as a singer and record producer. He wrote the music for the 1973 rock opera *La Révolution Française* and achieved a French number-one hit with 'Le Premier Pas' in 1974. In 1980 he and Boublil created the stage musical *Les Misérables*, which opened in London in 1985 and on Broadway in 1987, winning eight Tony Awards including Best Original Score.

Schönberg composed the score for the 2012 film adaptation of *Les Misérables*, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song ('Suddenly'). His other major works with Boublil include *Miss Saigon* (1989), *Martin Guerre* (1996), *The Pirate Queen* (2006) and *Marguerite* (2008).
