## Biography

Claude Sautet (also credited as Claude Marie Sautet) was a French film director and screenwriter. Born on 23 February 1924 in Montrouge, Hauts-de-Seine, he died on 22 July 2000 in Paris. He studied painting and sculpture before attending the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris. His early career included work as an assistant director and script doctor; he contributed to the screenplay and served as first assistant director on Georges Franju's *Eyes Without a Face* (1960).

Sautet made his feature directorial debut with *Classe tous risques* (*The Big Risk*, 1960). He gained wider recognition with *Les Choses de la vie* (*The Things of Life*, 1970), which he wrote and directed. Subsequent films included *Max et les ferrailleurs* (*Max and the Junkmen*, 1971), *César et Rosalie* (*César and Rosalie*, 1972), *Vincent, François, Paul et les autres* (*Vincent, François, Paul and the Others*, 1974) and *Un cœur en hiver* (*A Heart in Winter*, 1992). He collaborated with Romy Schneider on five films.

Sautet's later work included *Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud* (*Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud*, 1995). He received César Awards for Best Director for *Un cœur en hiver* and *Nelly et Monsieur Arnaud*.
