## Biography

Clements Ripley (26 August 1892 – 22 July 1954) was an American fiction writer and screenwriter. Born in Tacoma, Washington, he attended the Taft School and graduated from Yale University in 1916. He served as an officer in the US Army during the First World War and later settled in Charleston, South Carolina.

Ripley wrote seven novels and numerous short stories and serials, several of which were adapted for film, including *Gold Is Where You Find It* (1938) and *Black Moon* (1934). His screenwriting credits include the adaptation of *Jezebel* (1938, co-written with Abem Finkel and John Huston), *Love, Honor and Behave* (1938), *Buffalo Bill* (1944) and *Old Los Angeles* (1948). He was married to the writer Katharine Ball, with whom he collaborated.
