Arbor and Swifty want to earn money by collecting scrap in *The Selfish Giant* (2013). Barnard takes their enthusiasm seriously: the scrap trade has a price for what they collect, and the boys can understand the bargain. Neither has been made conveniently sweet for our benefit. That is where her films are most persuasive, when she lets people want something practical without asking them to deserve our sympathy first.

Her route to that directness began with experimental shorts and video work, and *The Arbor* (2010) carries that willingness to try unfamiliar methods into a documentary about playwright Andrea Dunbar. Its performers lip-sync recorded interviews, making the gap between a voice and the person we see impossible to ignore. The move into narrative features with *The Selfish Giant* did not mean abandoning the people or places that interested her. Bradford and working-class life remain central, as does working with performers to find convincing voices and relationships.

Barnard writes the scrap trade clearly enough for us to understand how adults can exploit the boys’ willingness to work. In *The Selfish Giant*, Sean Gilder’s Kitten is intimidating without becoming a grand villain, and Barnard’s screenplay makes his business understandable to the boys. Our reservation is the familiar course of the hardship: opportunities can seem too certain to become dangers. The boys’ humour keeps this from becoming a procession of misfortunes, but we sometimes recognise the direction of the story before they do.

*Dark River* (2017) takes her into rural family trauma, with PJ Harvey contributing to the score. *Ali & Ava* (2021) turns to romance in Bradford, developed through extended workshops with local people and incorporating music played within its scenes. The workshop process matters: it gives local people a part in how their lives are represented. The six-part television adaptation *The Essex Serpent* (2022) marks a move into larger-scale period drama.

We were moved by the friendship Conner Chapman and Shaun Thomas create in *The Selfish Giant*, because the boys’ humour and impatience keep pity from becoming our only response. They are allowed to be difficult company. Start there; even with its familiar plotting, it is a film we recommend warmly.

## Biography

Clio Barnard is a British film director and writer. She grew up in Otley, Yorkshire, and studied fine art at Newcastle Polytechnic (now Northumbria University) before completing a postgraduate diploma in electronic imaging at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design.

Her debut feature, the experimental documentary *The Arbor* (2010), explored the life of Bradford playwright Andrea Dunbar and received multiple awards, including the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards and the Guardian First Film Award. Her second feature, *The Selfish Giant* (2013), which she also wrote, premiered in the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Barnard has since directed the features *Dark River* (2017) and *Ali & Ava* (2021), and the television series *The Essex Serpent* (2022).
