## Biography

Clive Swift was an English actor. Born Clive Walter Swift on 9 February 1936 in Liverpool, he died on 1 February 2019. He studied English literature at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1960, remaining a member until 1968. He later taught at RADA and LAMDA.

Swift appeared in films including *Frenzy* (1972), *Excalibur* (1981) and *A Passage to India* (1984), in which he played Major Callendar. He was best known for his role as Richard Bucket in the BBC sitcom *Keeping Up Appearances* (1990–1995). Other television work included appearances in *Doctor Who*, *Inspector Morse*, *Midsomer Murders* and *The Old Guys* (2009–2010). He was also a songwriter.
