## Biography

Cole Porter was an American composer and lyricist. He was born in Peru, Indiana, on 9 June 1891 and studied at Yale University and Harvard University.

Porter wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical *Gay Divorce* (1932). The song "Night and Day" from the show appeared in the 1934 film adaptation *The Gay Divorcee*. His other stage works include *Anything Goes* (1934) and *Kiss Me, Kate* (1948); he also contributed songs to films such as *High Society* (1956) and *Silk Stockings* (1957).

Porter died in Santa Monica, California, on 15 October 1964.
