## Fi1m on Colin Chilvers

> Colin Chilvers could make an impossible movement look convincing. His *Smooth Criminal* sequence gives us reason to admire his practical ingenuity, but the disjointed *Moonwalker* is a poor place to look for sustained storytelling.

Michael Jackson leans forward in *Smooth Criminal* and appears to defy gravity. Chilvers achieved the effect with piano wire and heel slots, drawing on his experience of making Superman fly. We were delighted by the lean in *Moonwalker* (1988), because it adds a surprise to Jackson’s dancing without taking our attention away from him. The effect belongs to the performance. It gives us a clearer sense of Chilvers’s strengths than the feature assembled around it does.

His route to directing went through special-effects departments, with *The Rocky Horror Picture Show* (1975) among his earlier credits. *Superman* (1978), directed by Richard Donner, brought his breakthrough as creative supervisor and director of special effects. Wires, harnesses, front projection and miniatures helped make flight convincing; the ingenuity was in getting those methods to serve the action. From the mid-1980s he moved into directing, including *Smooth Criminal* and television episodes. Directing did not mean abandoning that trade: he later coordinated special effects on *X-Men* (2000).

In *Smooth Criminal*, the high-contrast shadows give the dancing a film-noir setting. Chilvers can make an extended musical passage worth watching for its movement and lighting. But our enthusiasm has limits: *Moonwalker* is a poorly joined feature, and Jackson’s performances offer relief rather than a reason to forgive its writing. Chilvers directed only *Smooth Criminal*, so it would be unfair to hold him responsible for every awkward change of style. Will Vinton, Jerry Kramer and Jim Blashfield also directed material, and the different approaches never quite fit together.

Editors David Blewitt, Mitchell Sinoway and Dale Beldin face the problem of joining passages that often seem complete in themselves. Individual sections move well, but transitions repeatedly lose momentum, asking us to become interested all over again. That is a serious limitation in a film built around the pleasure of watching a performer move. Watch *Smooth Criminal* for Chilvers’s practical invention; there is no obligation to make an evening of *Moonwalker*.

## Biography

Colin Chilvers (1945–2024) was an English director and special effects coordinator. He directed the 'Smooth Criminal' segment of Michael Jackson's anthology film *Moonwalker* (1988) and contributed to the related *HIStory on Film, Volume II* (1997).

Born in London, Chilvers trained at Hornsey College of Art. He began in special effects on films including *The Rocky Horror Picture Show* (1975) before supervising effects on *Superman* (1978), for which he shared a Special Achievement Academy Award in 1979. He later worked on *Superman II* (1980), *Superman III* (1983), *Condorman* (1981) and *X-Men* (2000).
