## Biography

Conway Tearle (born Frederick Conway Levy, 17 May 1878 – 1 October 1938) was an American stage and screen actor. He was born in New York City, the son of cornetist Jules Levy and actress Marianne 'Minnie' Conway. He adopted the surname of his stepfather, the British actor and theatre manager Osmond Tearle, and began his stage career in the late 1890s. His half-brother Godfrey Tearle also became an actor.

Tearle appeared in numerous stage productions before making his film debut in 1914. He worked in silent films and early sound pictures until 1936, when he played Escalus in the MGM adaptation of *Romeo and Juliet*. He died in Los Angeles at the age of 60.
