## Fi1m on Corin Hardy

> Corin Hardy’s strengths are creature design and forceful action. *Gangs of London* makes the case for the latter, and we recommend it to action enthusiasts, with reservations about the plotting and the relentless brutality.

The fights in *Gangs of London* (2020) keep finding ways to hold our attention when the gangland plotting cannot. Hardy directed half the episodes across its first two series, helping to shape the programme’s action style. It is the clearest reason to take an interest in his work: he has a useful feel for what makes screen violence forceful. Sope Dirisu’s presence matters just as much, giving the series someone worth watching between the fights. Anyone looking chiefly for persuasive crime plotting should temper their expectations.

His earlier films suggest where that interest in physical craft comes from. The stop-motion short *Butterfly* (2003) preceded a feature debut, *The Hallow* (2015), which he also wrote. There, practical-effects creatures rooted in Irish folklore established the horror side of his work. *The Nun* (2018) took him into studio horror before *Gangs of London* took him into crime drama. These are changes of format and scale, but the attention to monsters and bodily danger makes the progression easy to follow.

On *Gangs of London*, Hardy worked with creator and executive producer Gareth Evans, and became lead director and executive producer for the second series. The force of the programme is a shared achievement, not something to hand to a single name. We were worn down by its relentless brutality, even while the invention of the fights kept us watching. That is the limit of our enthusiasm: physical skill cannot make every further bout of violence equally compelling. With stronger plotting, there would be more to hold our attention when the fighting stops.

*Whistle* (2025), with its story centred on a cursed Aztec death whistle, takes him back to horror built around mythology. For an introduction to his work, we would start with *Gangs of London*, provided action is what you want from the evening. If relentless screen violence sounds like work, choose something else.
