> Craig Sheffer’s steadiness suits the older brother in *A River Runs Through It*. We are less persuaded when a film relies on him to sustain its unease: *Hellraiser: Inferno* exposes how little his performance changes.

Craig Sheffer’s detective stays much the same while everything around him grows stranger in *Hellraiser: Inferno* (2000). As Det. Joseph Thorne, he gives us an unpleasant man and too few reasons to look more closely. We grew weary of his company because so little changed in the performance as the film kept returning to him. A character does not have to be likeable, but the acting has to give us something to follow.

That narrowness is not the whole story of his work. The antagonistic rich boy Hardy Jenns in *Some Kind of Wonderful* (1987) belongs to an early stretch of roles built around charm and bad behaviour. *Nightbreed* (1990), Clive Barker’s horror film, put him in the lead as Aaron Boone and marked a turn towards genre work.

Robert Redford’s *A River Runs Through It* (1992) makes better use of his steadiness. Sheffer plays Norman Maclean, the stable older brother opposite Brad Pitt, and his naturalistic approach fits the ensemble. It is effective casting, even if the performance can seem competent and amiable where we might want someone more compelling.

Scott Derrickson’s *Hellraiser: Inferno* makes that limitation hard to ignore. Its unpleasant, dreamlike atmosphere is effective, and Sheffer is hardly required to make Thorne reassuring company. What is missing is variation: some change in the acting that would make sustained attention worthwhile. The film keeps him at its centre, so a limitation that might matter less in a supporting part becomes difficult to escape. That is why the atmosphere cannot compensate for the wearying investigation.

His later work includes a long-running television part as Keith Scott in *One Tree Hill* (2003–2012), alongside a continued presence in independent films. There is room in that career for dependable supporting work, which need not be faint praise. For a first encounter, we would choose Redford’s ensemble over an evening alone with Thorne.
