## Fi1m on Crispin Bonham-Carter

> Crispin Bonham-Carter makes Charles Bingley worth watching without demanding extra attention. We value the unforced charm he brings to *Pride and Prejudice*, though the smaller roles elsewhere offer less evidence on which to judge him.

Charles Bingley does not make a production of being agreeable. In *Pride and Prejudice* (1995), Crispin Bonham-Carter gives him a charm that needs little emphasis, even in the company of Colin Firth's Darcy. We were glad of his company because he and Susannah Harker's Jane Bennet bring a gentleness that the central courtship cannot always afford. Being nice is often an unrewarding assignment in a drama about attraction. Bonham-Carter makes it worth our attention.

His screen career began with the small part of Albert Fussell in James Ivory's *Howards End* (1992). We recommend the film warmly for Emma Thompson's performance and its attention to social slights, despite some hurried relationships. There is less here on which to base a judgement of Bonham-Carter himself. Early television work included *Scarlet and Black* (1993) and a leading role in the sitcom *Honey for Tea* (1994). Bingley brought wider recognition.

The Austen adaptation makes good use of his willingness to leave the emphasis elsewhere. Jennifer Ehle and Firth carry the central romance, while Bonham-Carter and Harker provide a quieter alternative. Firth makes Darcy's reserve seem to require effort; Bonham-Carter lets Bingley's friendliness look easy. Some supporting performances in the series are too broad for our taste, but his less conspicuous charm avoids that problem. He is useful to the ensemble because he gives us somebody to like without requiring us to find every appearance amusing.

Later supporting appearances included *Bridget Jones's Diary* (2001) and *Casino Royale* (2006). His move into education left a comparatively brief acting career, with Bingley still the clearest reason to seek out his work. That limits how much we can claim for him, but does not make the performance any less satisfying. Start with *Pride and Prejudice*, provided its leisurely pace appeals, and give the quieter courtship some attention too.
