## Fi1m on Daisy Edgar-Jones

> Daisy Edgar-Jones acts by holding still and letting us notice what it costs. That carried twelve episodes of *Normal People*; the blockbusters since have not yet worked out what to do with an actor whose best moment is a nod.

Watch what Daisy Edgar-Jones does with a nod. In *Normal People* (2020), Connell asks Marianne to tell nobody about them, she agrees, and the two of them stand there pretending this is fine. Nobody raises a voice. Edgar-Jones lets one small movement of the head carry the whole of the damage, and the scene left us hot with embarrassment on both their behalves. That is her method in one gesture: hold still, give away as little as possible, and let the audience do the work of noticing what it cost.

She had been working since she was 17, with a regular part in *Cold Feet* (2016–2020) and a run in *War of the Worlds* (2019–2021), but Marianne Sheridan was the part that made people look. Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald's adaptation of Sally Rooney's novel gave her twelve episodes to be misread. Her stillness reads as arrogance in the first hour and, once we know her, as something closer to a flinch, and Paul Mescal's Connell is the right partner for it, an actor who looks like he is thinking when he says nothing. Two people not saying things is hard to film. They made it the whole show.

The film parts came fast after that: *Fresh* (2022), *Where the Crawdads Sing* (2022), *Under the Banner of Heaven* (2022) on television, then *Twisters* (2024). The pattern is easy to see. She is cast as the quiet young woman with something held back, and she is good at it. The complaint some critics made about *Crawdads*, that she seemed more polished than the background the story gave her, is one we understand: her restraint can read as breeding, and not every part wants breeding.

*Twisters* is the test case and the warning. Lee Isaac Chung's sequel casts her as Kate, a storm chaser written as a wound with a driving licence, and Edgar-Jones plays her with intelligence and restraint while the script keeps stopping so she can be sad in a doorway. Glen Powell is a film star; she is an actor, and the difference shows when the film gives him the truck and her the sky to look at. They are good together in the handful of scenes the script allows. The trouble is that a blockbuster does not know what to do with a performer whose best work is a nod, so it asks her to grieve on cue instead. We spent much of it wishing someone would hand her a line worth withholding.

Next comes Elinor Dashwood in *Sense and Sensibility* (2026), Austen's sensible sister, a part built for an actor who can be hurt without moving. It fits her almost too well. The interesting career is the one where somebody casts her against that quiet and finds out what she does when she is finally allowed to shout.
