## Biography

Dalton Trumbo was an American screenwriter and novelist. Born in Montrose, Colorado, he began his career in Hollywood in the 1930s and became one of the highest-paid screenwriters by the 1940s, with credits including *Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo* (1944) and *Kitty Foyle* (1940).

In 1947, Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was blacklisted and continued to work under pseudonyms such as Robert Rich and others. His uncredited contributions included the screenplays for *Roman Holiday* (1953) and *The Brave One* (1956), both of which won Academy Awards.

Trumbo received public credit for *Spartacus* (1960) and *Exodus* (1960). Later works include the screenplay for *Papillon* (1973). He died in Los Angeles in 1976.
