Four series in, the tension holds and the plotting still does not. A woman in a heavy suit walks slowly towards a car everyone else has been moved back from. In Daniel Brierley's *Trigger Point* (2022) that walk happens roughly once an hour, and each time it does the series works exactly as intended. Vicky McClure's Lana Washington kneels, looks, decides, and the programme goes quiet around her. Brierley researched the job with real explosives officers and it shows in the detail: what she touches first, what she says into the radio, how long she waits. We held our breath at the first device and were still holding it at the sixth. He came to television late and by a slow road: stage plays, among them *The Hobo Code* at Soho Theatre and *Farmyard Rules* at the Bush, a BBC short called *My Face in Space* (2012), and an MA in screenwriting the same year. *Trigger Point* was developed with Jed Mercurio, commissioned by ITV in 2019 and became his first major series; further runs followed in 2024, 2025 and 2026, with Chris Brandon co-writing. Brierley's plotting is a chain of suspects, each pointed at in turn, each explained at length by one police officer to another who already knows. We laughed at *Trigger Point* in places where it wanted us grave, and by the last hour of the first series we were checking whether we had missed an episode. The first episode ends on a turn we will not describe, and it is the boldest thing he has written; nothing afterwards matched its nerve. He has a locked-room thriller, an adaptation of *The Second Stranger*, in development for the BBC, along with a *Trigger Point* spin-off and a crime drama for Working Title. A locked room is a promising place for him: one space, one clock, nobody able to leave and explain the plot to anyone. Whether he can write the hour between the devices as well as he writes the device is the whole question of his career so far.
