We value him as a supporting presence, though *Bob le Flambeur* gives his Paulo too little to hold our attention consistently. In *Bob le Flambeur* (1956), Daniel Cauchy's Paulo is the young protégé in Jean-Pierre Melville's leisurely criminal company. Cauchy brings youthful energy, but our attention keeps returning to Roger Duchesne's Bob. He fits the company without making Paulo as interesting as the man at its centre.
