## Biography

Daniel Pennac (real name Daniel Pennacchioni) is a French writer born on 1 December 1944 in Casablanca, Morocco. He is known for his novels, including the Malaussène series, and children's books such as *L'œil du loup* (1984). Pennac wrote the screenplay for the animated film *Ernest & Celestine* (2012), based on books by Gabrielle Vincent.

After studying in Nice, he worked as a teacher before publishing fiction from the early 1980s. His 2007 essay *Chagrin d'école* won the Prix Renaudot. He is also credited with the novel on which *The Scapegoat* (2013) is based.
