We value his contribution because the film needs someone to fear for when Jack Nicholson makes the danger so conspicuous. Danny Lloyd gives us someone to worry about in the family scenes of *The Shining* (1980). Beside Jack Nicholson’s broad performance, his Danny has a vulnerability that needs little emphasis. Nicholson makes Jack’s instability plain enough to weaken the possibility that this family could ever have lived tolerably together. Lloyd and Shelley Duvall, as Wendy, make their shared life worth attending to even when Nicholson threatens to distract us with another display. We were frightened for Danny because Lloyd makes the child credible where the danger around him can feel overplayed.
