Anspaugh began as an associate producer on television films and advanced to producer and director on the series *Hill Street Blues* (1981), for which he received two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Directors Guild of America Award. He subsequently directed episodes of *St. Elsewhere* (1982) and *Miami Vice* (1984). His feature film directing debut was *Hoosiers* (1986), followed by *Rudy* (1993) and other films including *Moonlight and Valentino* (1995) and *The Game of Their Lives* (2005).
