## Biography

David Black is an American screenwriter, novelist and journalist. He has written episodes of the television series *Hill Street Blues* (1981), *Miami Vice* (1984) and *Law & Order* (1990), for which he co-wrote the first on-air episode; he also contributed stories and teleplays to *Law & Order* and served as story editor on *Miami Vice*.

Born on 21 April 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts, Black graduated from Amherst College in 1967. He taught as writer-in-residence at Mount Holyoke College from 1982 to 1986 before focusing on television writing and producing in the late 1980s. His other credits include *CSI: Miami* (2002), *Law & Order: Criminal Intent* (2001) and *Blue Bloods* (2010). He wrote the screenplay for the 1999 television film *The Confession*.

Black has received a Writers Guild of America Award for *The Confession* and Edgar Award nominations for episodes of *Law & Order*. He is also the author of novels including *Like Father* and nonfiction works such as *The King of Fifth Avenue* and *Murder at the Met*.
