> David Boyd gave *Firefly* its Western light and shot the first season of *The Walking Dead* on grainy Super 16mm. As a director he is a safe pair of hands on other people's series, and so far no more than that.

The opening season of *The Walking Dead* does most of its frightening in the sun. Frank Darabont's six episodes put the dead outdoors at noon, and David Boyd, his director of photography, shot them on Super 16mm, so the picture carries a grain and the light burns rather than glows. We were frightened in broad daylight, which is harder to manage than fear in the dark, and a good part of that was the film stock. Nothing looked clean and nothing looked safe.

Boyd came up through the camera department on documentaries and low-budget films and made his name as director of photography on *Firefly* (2002), where he drew on the Westerns of Hollywood's golden age to work out how a spaceship and a frontier town might share a frame. He carried that look to *Deadwood*, which needed no persuading, and then to *Without a Trace* and *Friday Night Lights*, shooting most of that show's first season and directing several episodes of it. That was the turn. On *The Walking Dead* he shot nine episodes and directed thirteen between 2011 and 2021.

The move from the camera to the director's chair is a common one and it rarely produces a director with a manner of his own. Boyd was candid about this when he first took an episode of *The Walking Dead*: "For me it’s the same process, same prep, same thought. This’ll just have me talking to the actors a bit more." His episodes keep the action and the quieter scenes in proportion, which is a cinematographer's habit, knowing what a frame can hold before you fill it. They do not announce themselves. Our review of the series found the quality wandering across eleven seasons and 177 episodes without needing to name the director of any given hour, and Boyd's hours are among those we could not pick out. On a show that size that is close to a compliment.

He has directed one feature, *Home Run* (2013), which he also shot, and the rest of the work since has been episodes: *Queen of the South*, *Longmire* and lately *Daredevil: Born Again*, series that need a director who can arrive on a Monday and deliver the house look by Friday. Boyd can. Whether he has a look of his own as a director is a question the work has not yet asked him. If you want to see what he does best, watch the first season of *The Walking Dead*, then find *Firefly*, and notice how much of both is a Western.

## Biography

David Boyd is an American cinematographer and television director. He served as director of photography on the first season of the AMC series *The Walking Dead* (2010) before directing 13 episodes across seasons two to ten.

Boyd graduated from the UCLA Film School after studying at the University of California, San Diego. He is a member of the American Society of Cinematographers and has directed episodes of series including *Friday Night Lights*, *Queen of the South* and *The Walking Dead*. He also directed the 2013 feature film *Home Run*.
