## Fi1m on David Harbour

> David Harbour makes gruff men worth listening to: their weariness and need for company feel ordinary. We value that unforced warmth, though a persuasive performance cannot make a formula script less predictable.

In the garage scenes of *Gran Turismo* (2023), David Harbour delivers the familiar dressing-down as though he has spent years having to give it. His Jack Salter is grey-stubbled, unimpressed and reluctant to pretend this is a sensible enterprise. The warning to the recruits about a driver's fear sounds like something he has had to learn. Neill Blomkamp's film needs that credibility, because Zach Baylin and Jason Hall's script follows the underdog routine with dispiriting obedience. Harbour makes these scenes watchable without making the film worth recommending.

Supporting parts in *Brokeback Mountain* (2005) and *Revolutionary Road* (2008) preceded his breakthrough as Jim Hopper in *Stranger Things* (2016). Matt and Ross Duffer give him a police chief who initially searches for a missing boy largely to be seen doing his job. Harbour makes the intelligence apparent beneath the weariness, while the sadness seems too familiar to Hopper to need announcing. The first run gives him a well-built small-town horror story; later runs grow larger without reliably improving it.

After Hopper came larger genre roles: the title part in *Hellboy* (2019) and Red Guardian in *Black Widow* (2021). They are an understandable use of his size and gruffness, but we would not make physical authority a requirement of every part. In Soderbergh's *No Sudden Move* (2021), his accountant Matt Wertz sweats through his shirts. Harbour is useful here precisely because he can look like a man who has no idea what to do next.

Steven Conrad's *DTF St. Louis* (2026) gives the softer side of his acting more to do. As Floyd Smernitch, Harbour makes the wish for company feel embarrassingly reasonable, while Jason Bateman helps make the friendship convincing. We were moved by Floyd's loneliness because Harbour made it seem so ordinary, even when Conrad's dialogue was straining for oddness. Linda Cardellini brings comic force to the central triangle, so the men are not left to carry every joke. The investigation is less engaging and the pace slackens, but the friendship gives us enough reason to stay.

Start with the first run of *Stranger Things*, then try *DTF St. Louis* for a less imposing Harbour. Give the latter's investigation some patience. We would happily watch him and Bateman spend longer making a mess of middle age.
