## Fi1m on David Lee

> David Lee favours long sitcom scenes that give actors time to respond. We rate *Frasier* highly, though some of its misunderstandings continue after the last good joke.

In *Frasier* (1993), John Mahoney’s Martin Crane can give a plain answer without sounding as though he has been waiting for his allotted joke. We warmed to him because Mahoney makes that response feel considered, keeping the surrounding cleverness bearable. David Lee’s preference for long, continuous scenes gives this kind of ensemble acting time to work. He treats a television episode as a short play, allowing the characters to stay together rather than moving on as soon as a joke lands. We rate that patience highly, provided the scene continues to earn it.

Lee’s writing partnership with Peter Casey took him through *The Jeffersons* (1975) and *Cheers* (1982). With Casey and David Angell, he went on to co-create *Wings* (1990) and *Frasier*, directing episodes of both. That shared authorship matters when assessing the finished comedy: Lee helped shape the programmes, but the writing and performances cannot all be credited to him. His later direction of stage revivals, including *Can-Can*, *Camelot* and *South Pacific*, follows an interest already evident in his television work.

*Frasier* gives us the clearest reason to value that approach. Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce are its chief pleasures, yet the exchanges need more than two actors who know precisely how long to wait. Jane Leeves gives Daphne Moon a useful directness, while Peri Gilpin’s confident Roz Doyle stops everyone becoming too deferential to Frasier. When Grammer listens, they keep the conversation alive. Lee’s commitment to extended character interaction suits a cast like this, because another person’s response can be worth staying for.

The reservation is there in *Frasier* too: some misunderstandings last beyond their final good joke. Giving a scene more time is only useful while the characters still have something funny or revealing to do, and Lee’s preferred length cannot guarantee that. We would still take this willingness to let an exchange develop over cutting away before it has properly begun. Start with *Frasier*, where the actors usually make the extra time worthwhile.
