## Biography

David Markham (1913–1983) was an English stage and film actor. Born Peter Basil Harrison in Wick, Worcestershire, he adopted his stage name early in his career. In 1937 he married Olive Dehn, a BBC Radio dramatist; they had four daughters, including actresses Kika Markham and Petra Markham.

Markham's screen career spanned from the late 1930s to the early 1980s. He appeared in Carol Reed's *The Stars Look Down* (1939) and later in François Truffaut's *Two English Girls* (1971) and *Day for Night* (1973). He played Reverend Mr. Clare in Roman Polanski's *Tess* (1979) and an Older Englishman in Richard Attenborough's *Gandhi* (1982). During the Second World War he was imprisoned as a conscientious objector before undertaking forestry work.
