## Biography

David Newman was an American screenwriter. Born in New York City on 4 February 1937, he studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees. He began his career as an editor at Esquire magazine, where he met Robert Benton.

Newman and Benton collaborated on the screenplay for *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967), which brought them widespread recognition. They worked together on several further projects, including *There Was a Crooked Man...* (1970) and *Bad Company* (1972). Newman later collaborated with his wife, the writer Leslie Newman, on the screenplays for *Superman* (1978), *Superman II* (1980) and *Superman III* (1983), among other films.

He died in New York City on 27 June 2003 following a stroke.
