## Biography

David Richards was a British television director. Born in 1948 in Hollinwood, Oldham, Greater Manchester, he began his career at Granada Television and worked as a researcher before directing documentaries and current affairs programmes. He later specialised in drama, directing episodes of series including *Coronation Street*, *The Bill* and *Emmerdale*.

Richards directed episodes of *Foyle's War* (2010), *Case Histories* (2013), *Vera* (2014), *DCI Banks* (2015) and eight episodes of *Silent Witness* (2013–2017). Earlier credits include the miniseries *Reckless* (1997), *This Is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper* (2000) and *Conviction* (2004). He received BAFTA nominations and won the Best Director award at the New York Film and TV Festival for *This Is Personal*.

He was married to Judith Hackett and co-founded the production company AKA Pictures with her and screenwriter Paul Abbott. Richards died on 9 January 2017 in Islington, London.
