## Fi1m on David Rogers

> David Rogers knows when a comedy should stop watching the person speaking. We value the reaction-led timing he brings to *The Office*, though his work there tells us more about his editing than his directing.

The boss has spoken; the disapproval on another face gets time to register. In *The Office* (2005), editors David Rogers and Dean Holland make those reactions as important as the remark that prompted them. We winced at Steve Carell's neediness because the silent judgement of the other faces made the boss's behaviour harder to shrug off. This is a substantial contribution to a workplace comedy we like, despite its borrowed beginnings and occasional overplaying.

The effect depends on more than the edit. Cinematographers Randall Einhorn and Matt Sohn make the camera seem to notice behaviour rather than arrange it, and that apparent informality gives the awkwardness room to develop. With no canned laughter, we are left to decide how far our sympathy for the boss extends. Rogers began directing the series in its fifth season, with *Employee Transfer*, after working on it as an editor. He already knew how its comedy could be built from the people listening.

The later credits keep him working across directing, editing and producing, rather than abandoning one job for another. On *The Mindy Project* (2012), he directed and produced; on *Upload* (2020), he combined directing, editing and executive producing. *Upload* also continued his collaboration with Greg Daniels. His practical approach to directing includes planning coverage that will cut together and using whip-pans or multiple cameras within documentary-style constraints. That preparation matters when a joke depends on having another face to cut to.

*The Paper* (2025) returns him to a series connected to *The Office*, again as director, editor and producer. We would not give Rogers sole credit for the comic timing of programmes made with so many collaborators. Holland's contribution matters, and the occasional overplaying in *The Office* is a reminder that careful cutting cannot fix everything in front of the camera. We recommend *The Office* with that reservation, and suggest watching the people who have not been given the line.
