## Fi1m on David Wilmot

> David Wilmot plays men who are not the hero and know it: cranks, bullies, the old friend who ends up in charge. He is best given a little power and time to get used to it, and *Station Eleven* gave him both.

Watch Clark Thompson run his airport. In *Station Eleven* (2021) a planeload of passengers landed on the first day of the plague and never left, and twenty years later Clark, an old friend of the dead actor at the centre of the story, is in charge of the settlement that grew up in the terminal. David Wilmot plays him as a decent man slowly discovering how much he enjoys being in charge, and he takes his time about the discovering. We liked Clark for several episodes and then noticed, with some discomfort, that we had been liking a man getting used to power, and that Wilmot had let us do it on purpose.

That is the kind of part he gets and the kind he is good at. He is usually cast as an Irish supporting man, cantankerous, flawed or frightening, in crime stories, period pieces and dark comedies, and he tends to play them in his own accent, which helps. He came out of Dublin theatre, the Abbey and Druid, and made his film debut in *The Field* (1990), with an early appearance in *Michael Collins* (1996). The parts that made people notice came later: *Intermission* (2003) and Liam O'Leary in *The Guard* (2011), the second of two films with John Michael McDonagh and Brendan Gleeson. On stage he was the first Padraic in Martin McDonagh's *The Lieutenant of Inishmore*, an explosive lead, which is not what you would guess from the quiet man in the airport.

He does not think of himself as funny. "I never thought of myself as a comic actor. All my theatre work has been very serious," he has said, and the screen record bears him out in an odd way: the laughs in *Intermission* and *The Guard* come from men who are entirely serious about themselves. He is not a lead and does not appear to want to be. The nearest anyone comes to a reservation about him is that he prefers the supporting part, and we are not sure that counts.

His recent work is in period dress. He is John in Chloé Zhao's *Hamnet* (2025), a film we thought Jessie Buckley carried, and Bonnie Champion in *House of Guinness* (2025), a series we recommended for its cast. In neither did we stop to single him out, and that is the honest shape of a career like this: most of the time he is doing his job inside an ensemble and the job is not to be noticed. When the writing hands him a man with a little authority and a long while to grow into it, as *Station Eleven* did, he is worth the whole series. We would like somebody to hand him another.
