## Fi1m on Debra Granik

> Debra Granik's films take time over the daily lives of people under pressure. We rate her patience and restraint highly, though *Winter's Bone* sometimes makes its heroine so dependably decent that another ordeal tells us little.

In *Winter's Bone* (2010), a question about a missing father can make an ordinary exchange dangerous. Debra Granik lets us hear the caution in the replies and consider what speaking freely might cost these people. We felt uneasy watching Ree Dolly make her enquiries, because Granik makes the danger of an honest answer clear. This is a director we rate highly for making hardship specific without repeatedly displaying suffering. The mystery remains tense, but there is time to understand the community Ree has to live in.

That interest in how people manage difficult daily lives runs through a small body of features made at long intervals. *Down to the Bone* (2004), her first feature, established her concern with addiction and class in upstate New York. After *Winter's Bone*, she made *Stray Dog* (2014), a documentary about a Vietnam veteran she met during that film's production. *Leave No Trace* (2018) returned to fiction, examining a father and daughter, self-reliance and reintegration. These shifts between documentary and fiction suit a filmmaker who shoots on location and works with local non-professional actors.

Anne Rosellini, her producer and co-writer across the narrative features, is central to that work. Their adaptation of Daniel Woodrell's novel in *Winter's Bone* keeps Ree's search important without letting it crowd out the business of living. Editor Affonso Gonçalves keeps the investigation clear and gives the guarded exchanges time to register. Dickon Hinchliffe's score does not soften the hardship, while the mountain music allows a welcome break from the strained conversations.

The difficulty is that Granik and Rosellini give Ree less untidiness than the people around her. Her decency becomes so reliable that another ordeal can tell us little, and the lack of lightness begins to feel dutiful. Jennifer Lawrence keeps her from becoming merely an example of how to behave under pressure, but we wanted the writing to give her more room. That matters in a film that stays so close to its heroine, though Lawrence remains convincing and Granik sustains the tension. Start with *Winter's Bone*, even if its description suggests more hardship than an evening needs.
