## Biography

Denis Héroux (1940–2015) was a Canadian film director and producer. Born in Montreal, he began directing in the early 1960s with the student film *Seul ou avec d'autres* (1962) and went on to make a series of commercial features in Quebec, including *Valérie* (1968) and *L'Initiation* (1970).

From the late 1970s he focused primarily on producing, often in international co-productions. His credits include *Atlantic City* (1980), *Quest for Fire* (1981), *The Plouffe Family* (1981) and *The Bay Boy* (1984). He was a co-founder of Alliance Films and worked with directors such as Louis Malle, Jean-Jacques Annaud and Bruce Beresford.

Héroux received an Academy Award nomination for best picture as producer of *Atlantic City*. He won two Genie Awards for best motion picture, for *The Plouffe Family* and *The Bay Boy*, and was appointed to the Order of Canada.
