Born in New York City on 1 April 1957, she began her career as a child performer in television and on stage. She is best known for her role as Violet Beauregarde in the 1971 film *Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory*. She had recurring roles as Amy Jennings, Nora Collins and Amy Collins in the soap opera *Dark Shadows* (1968–1970), and played Allison in the children's series *The Electric Company* (1972–1973). Other credits include appearances in *The Brady Bunch* and the film *Smile* (1975). Nickerson retired from acting in the late 1970s and later worked in administrative roles.
