## Fi1m on Dennis Lehane

> Dennis Lehane gives crime stories people worth worrying about and communities that help explain their behaviour. We rate him most when those lives deepen the investigation; *Smoke* shows how easily the talk can begin to hold it up.

In *Mystic River* (2003), the police investigation keeps giving way to three boyhood friends still living with the effects of a childhood crime. That is where Dennis Lehane's writing is most persuasive: in people who cannot simply put violence behind them. We found the film painful because Tim Robbins and Marcia Gay Harden make the damage feel personal, even when the film keeps explaining it. Clint Eastwood directs Brian Helgeland's adaptation of Lehane's novel, so the credit needs sharing.

His early Boston private-eye novels, beginning in 1994, followed Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. The standalone *Mystic River* (2001) moved beyond that detective series and brought him wider recognition. Working-class neighbourhoods and the rhythms of local speech give his characters a specific place to belong. His protagonists can themselves be complicit in the wrongs they confront.

*The Wire* (2002) is our strongest recommendation among his screen credits, but its achievement is not his alone. He wrote three episodes, in seasons three to five, for David Simon's programme. The programme makes the departmental business of Baltimore's drug war absorbing. We recommend it to those who usually avoid police dramas, with a warning that it can also be exhausting.

Since the mid-2010s, he has worked increasingly in television as a writer, producer and series creator. He created and wrote *Black Bird* (2022) and *Smoke* (2025). That makes these more direct tests of his screenwriting than adaptations written by somebody else. In *Smoke*, Taron Egerton and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine make a strong case for staying with an uneven series.

But its nine-episode arson investigation too often waits while the characters explain themselves. Lehane and his fellow writers are interested in delusion, trauma and the stories people tell about themselves; those are sound reasons to look beyond the culprits. The repetition is harder to defend. More time with a character does not help when the investigation stops holding our attention. Start with *Mystic River* for the people, and approach *Smoke* only if a strong cast matters more to you than a tight crime story.
