## Biography

Derek Bennett was a British television director and producer. Born in Birmingham on 5 November 1930, he joined Granada Television in 1960. There he directed the first episode of *Coronation Street* in December 1960 and a total of 25 episodes of the series between 1960 and 1962.

Bennett directed numerous episodes of *Upstairs, Downstairs* during the 1970s. He also directed episodes of *Beryl's Lot* and, between 1990 and 1992, episodes of *Emmerdale*. He frequently produced the programmes he directed and worked on various anthology and drama series. Bennett retired in 1990 and died in 2005.
