## Biography

Derek Martin (born Derek William Rapp) was an English actor and former stuntman. Born in Bow, London, on 11 April 1933, he undertook National Service in the Royal Air Force before working in various jobs including as a meat porter at Smithfield Market. He entered television as an extra and stunt performer, later transitioning to acting after a collarbone injury sustained on the 1971 production Elizabeth R.

Martin’s breakthrough came as corrupt detective DI Fred Pyall in the 1978 BBC drama Law & Order. He appeared in numerous British television series including Doctor Who (as David Mitchell among other roles), King & Castle, Eldorado and The Bill. His most prominent role was as Charlie Slater in the BBC soap EastEnders from 2000 to 2011, with later guest returns until 2016. He also appeared as himself in Little Britain (2005). Martin died on 10 January 2026, aged 92.
