## Biography

Derrick Goodwin (1935–2022) was an English theatre and television director, writer and producer. Born in London, he was educated at St Mary's School, Hendon, and studied music at the Royal Academy of Music (or Royal College of Music). He began his career in stage management at the Royal Court Theatre and went on to found the Living Theatre Company in Leicester with Ken Loach and others. He held positions including artistic director of the Dundee Repertory Company and associate director at the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, before moving into television at the BBC.

On television, Goodwin directed episodes of series including *Z-Cars*, *Coronation Street* (1971), *New Scotland Yard*, *Within These Walls* and the *Doctor Who* story *The Invisible Enemy* (1977). He also produced and directed comedy series such as *Dear Mother... Love Albert* (which he co-wrote with Rodney Bewes) and *Mixed Blessings* (which he co-wrote with Sid Green). He spent time working with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and later concentrated on theatre writing and teaching. He was married to actress Nell Curran from 1980.
