## Fi1m on Devon Sawa

> Devon Sawa's best work is done standing still and saying nothing, letting a room decide what he is. Thirty years on from *Casper* he is a watchful, reliable presence in horror and thrillers, and too often the best thing in them.

In *The Girl in the River* (2026) Devon Sawa spends his first scenes at the back of a funeral with his hands in his pockets, saying almost nothing, while a small town looks at him and makes up its mind. It is the one stretch of the film in which anything is at stake, and it is his doing: we could watch him deciding whether to defend himself. That is what he does now, and he does it well. He waits, and he lets the camera catch him thinking.

It is a long way from where he started. As the human Casper in *Casper* (1995) he was on screen for a few minutes, asked Christina Ricci "Can I keep you?", and spent years living it down. He worked with Ricci again in *Now and Then* (1995), made *Wild America* (1997), and then set about getting away from all of it: *Idle Hands* (1999), the lead in *Final Destination* (2000) and Eminem's "Stan" video the same year. He was frank about the plan later: he felt he had to smoke pot on screen and turn up in a hip-hop video to put that one line behind him. *Slackers* and *Extreme Ops* (both 2002) were badly received, and not long afterwards he stepped away for about five years.

The return came through television, first *Nikita* (2010–2013) and then, more usefully, Don Mancini's *Chucky* (2021–2024), where he played five parts across three seasons and got to be several different men in one series. Around it he has built a steady second career in horror and thrillers: *Hunter Hunter* (2020), *Consumed* (2024), *Heart Eyes* (2025) and now *The Girl in the River*. The pattern holds. He plays the haunted man, the flawed policeman, the provider who will do something terrible, and reviewers keep singling him out from scripts they otherwise dislike.

That is the strength and the problem. He is intense without being loud; he does not raise his voice to be believed. Put him opposite an actor who is also listening, as he is with Maggie Grace in *The Girl in the River*, and a scene has a pulse. But the films have not kept pace with him. We were bored forty minutes into that one and then cross about it, because every close-up of his promised a better picture than the one around him, and a promise kept for ninety minutes and never honoured by the script is worse than plain dullness.

He has said he is drawn to the criminologist side of these stories, the *Manhunter* side, and you can see it: he plays men who watch other men. What he needs is a director who will build a whole film on that watching rather than cutting away from it to explain the plot. Until one turns up, he is the reason to stay with films you would otherwise abandon, which is a compliment, though not the one he has earned.
